How do i get this coloring? Thanks in advance :)

Heey, today we'll do a coloring tutorial with curves, sc layers, and more!
How make this to this using Photoshop CS2, but i dont know if you can do in others programs.
( everybody scared sometimes... )

Exemples:

i'm trying to make a transparent to black gradient saved as a .gif, but i keep running into some problems.

How many of you work in a bookstore or a library? I work in a bookstore :)

Also, would like to add I read The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran yesterday and it was very good. If you want something to think about I suggest you read it. If you like Paulo Coelho you'll like Gibran but am I alone in thinking this? I'm also a chapter or so into Mitch Silver's In Secret Service and it is good as well. A story about a lost Ian Fleming book with some twists.

For those who don't know the lead vocalist of High and Mighty Color will be leaving at the end of the year so the band's future is unknown. I wasn't a particular die-hard fan but I know people that are.
